Petersham CATEGORY Residential - Boarding House DESCRIPTION Alterations and additions to existing heritage building for self-contained studio rooms BRIEF The brief provided to us for this project was to create an adaptive re-use for the dilapidated heritage conservation building to prolong the lifespan and longevity of c. 1880 built terrace style structure. OVERVIEW The site is located within a heritage conservation area which dictated our approach and concept to this project. The rear wing addition was required to take a 'back seat' in the overall design process whilst still being able to provide a complementary visual and spatial connection to the immediate context. The key element to the design process undertaken was to retain, restore and and upkeep the streetscape conditions and heritage conservation area values. Revealing and restoring the original heritage facade facing the street was a crucial aspect in fulfilling our concept and desired design intent. The rear wing addition had to be completely recessive and secondary to avoid any perceived visual intrusion. This has been demonstrated through the use of chosen materials, colours and finishes that is consistent with prevailing characteristics of nerighbouring buildings and structures. The contrasting external appearance to the rear wing defines the original building that clearly identifies the distinct eras of existence and construction methodologies. The project has successfully adapted and re-used a timeless building typology without compromising any environmental conditions or streetscape qualities. STATUS Completed
